Chapter 11

Our Next Course of Action

"Thanks again for everything you've done." Yuvva bowed, standing beside our giant sand sail, ready to see us off.

"Please, think nothing of it. We couldn't have such a beast causing problems for everyone." Saavni smiled, happy she could help the resistance of her country.

Yuvva nodded. "If I may ask, what do you plan to do with the beast fragment?"

"We will place it in the chamber next to ours, where our family advisor will oversee it," Jai explained his intentions, gripping the reins of the desert runners ever so tightly.

More than anyone else, he probably wanted to get back to Thary as soon as possible. After all, our trip to Masc, which was only supposed to be a few hours, ended up being an entire day. The monk likely wanted to quell any concerns Sarika had with his absence.

"Regardless, thanks again!" Yuvva showed us one last bit of gratitude as Jai pulled on the reins, prompting the giant lizards to pull away from the stables.

The rest of us waved to the young woman while she and the gloomy city grew smaller and smaller until they vanished over the horizon.

I got comfortable in the oversized sled, staring at the dull gray clouds blocking the sun. It'd only be a matter of time before the harsh rays returned to sear my skin, and I wanted to enjoy the overcast this specific region of Drej provided.

"By the way, Jai. You mentioned that you plan on placing the two fragments of the beast next to each other, correct?" Valda, of all people, broke the well-crafted silence with a question.

"That is correct, why do you ask?" Jai peered over his shoulder, seemingly taking the elf's inquiry as an insult.

"No reason in particular. I was just wondering if that would be wise given recent events." Valda's words made me give Jai's decision a bit more thought.

What would happen if one of the fragments reawakened right next to the other? If they were to combine somehow, we'd be dealing with a far larger issue than some demonic bird.

"If you have any concerns about the fragments unsealing themselves, put them to rest. While Zain and I may not always see eye to eye, he is competent enough not to let something like that happen within the palace walls." From Jai's response, it sounded like Zain could keep the fragments under control.

"If you have that level of confidence in him, I won't say anymore..." I could tell from her tone that Valda wasn't wholly convinced but opted to drop the subject. There wasn't much point in questioning Jai on matters he didn't fully comprehend.

As we got further away from Masc, the clouds parted, prompting the oh-so-familiar heat of Drej to rear its ugly head. I let out a dry sigh, wishing we had brought water as Hildbova took out her parasol and lifted over me.

"I swear, I have to wonder what state you'd be in by now if you had refused to change clothes." The nun mocked the arrogance I displayed at the start of the trip, enjoying my discomfort.
